Fire & Water - Cleanup & Restoration

SERVPRO is Proud to Participate in the 2019 Memorial Stair Climb

412 emergency first responders lost their lives during the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Firefighters, paramedics, and police officers all responded to the call for aid and, unfortunately, some of them lost their lives. Across the country, many people chose to remember the fallen heroes in their own way. Here in Knoxville, an annual event is held to remember the 343 first response firefighters who died trying to save the lives of others.

SERVPRO of Rocky Hill / Sequoyah Hills / South Knoxville gathered with many first responders, and other locals, at the Sunsphere in Worlds Fair Park. The goal for the local first responders, and other participants, is to climb “the equivalent of 110 stories.” By climbing 110 stories, the participants match the amount of climbing that the firefighters would have had to face during the events of 9/11. We honor them by trying to understand just a piece of their struggle that day.

Before the beginning of the event, one of the event representatives spoke to the crowd. “Beginning at approximately 8:47 this morning, following a moment of silence and a single bell toll, local first responders will begin their climb up the stairs…” This year, there were “217 climbers” ready to take on the steps.

“Each climber will be accompanied by name tags that represent the 343 first responders that were lost eighteen years ago, on September 11, 2001.” The stair climb is not a race, and it is not timed. The only goal of the day is to get to finish the climb and to remember those who were lost. The event benefits the FDNY CSU with donations for the families of the first responders who died that day, eighteen years ago.

Here at SERVPRO, we are proud to take part in an event dedicated to remembering the sacrifices of such amazing heroes. Each year that we participate, “we are always touched to see so many first responders at the event.” We believe in aiding our nation-wide community when they need us, an example set by those firefighters that passed away eighteen years ago. We look up to and respect those who came before. “Join the climb and honor the heroes we lost. May we never forget [them.]”
